Spring on the Farm

I love living on a farm...well next to a farm.  It really is the best of both worlds.  I get to see all the beauty of farm life, but I don't have to participate in the blood, sweat and tears that go along with it.  Oh, don't get me wrong, I've given a fair share of blood, sweat and tears to this very land, it's just that my little corner of it doesn't require all that anymore.

The cows were all upset this morning and forming a circle and bawling like crazy.  That usually means that there is a young one on the ground and there is an intruder in the area.  Sure enough, our neighbor's little pot belly pig had come for a visit.  The cows and the horse sent him back home.

After the cows had disbanded their vigil, there on the ground was a little black calf.

Knowing that I would disturb it even more and yet wanting to see it up close (it's been a long time since I've been up close and personal with a new born calf) I ventured into our field.  Now I felt somewhat safe because of those few strands of barbed wire between us.  I would never have done this if that fence wasn't there.  Momma cows can be mean and she eyed me as soon as I walked through the gate.

There began this communication between momma and bady and momma and her friends and the little one stood on wobbly legs and headed to his momma.  Then one of the other momma cows came over to assist and the two of them lead the little one away from me.

The little one got a confused as to which one was his momma for a moment, but her voice was all it took to get him headed in the right direction.

It didn't take but a few steps until this new born was trying out his legs and seeing how running, a slow run, but still running worked.  The other kids wanted to check out the new kid on the block, but momma cow wouldn't put up with any of that either.

Spring is here and the nursery is in full bloom!
